Essential Components of Facilities Management

Your facilities management team is one of the most important (and underappreciated) elements of your workplace.

Once upon a time, facilities management was limited to reacting to problems. Now, with the assistance of new technology, facilities managers play a proactive role in supporting the productivity of employees.

Here are three components of facilities management that make it essential to the health and functionality of your entire workplace.

Performance Management and Quality Control

Quick question: how is your workforce performing? How is your work environment performing? Are they operating at maximum efficiency, or is there room for improvement? And if they are efficient, do they have the quality to match?

Without facilities management, you won’t know the answer to any of these questions, and your performance management will suffer for it.

Facilities managers are responsible for delving into the details of what makes a workplace tick. They have to know how employees function in the workplace and how their environment influences their performance. More than that, facilities managers are the ones who ensure that employees have what they need to thrive.

This also means turning a critical eye to how employees work in order to eliminate redundancies and use resources as effectively as possible to ensure optimal outcomes.

Communications Management

Of course, none of that will help you without another key function of facilities management: communication management.

Your whole team has to be able to communicate with each other at all levels, from basic tasks to year long goals. But these communications also need to be managed to ensure nothing falls between the cracks, to ensure that everyone has the information they need and is on the same page.

That’s where facilities managers come in. They’re responsible for coordinating documentation and communicating changes so that anyone who needs information can find it quickly and effectively.

Sustainable Cost Management

Last but not least, facilities managers are critical in creating sustainable cost management methods.

This makes sense when you recall that facilities managers are, above all, responsible for efficiency. They have to be able to look at the complete picture of their facility and understand where the facility could improve and where it’s already strong.

The best facilities managers are those who know how to look at extensive facilities data and compile it into a portrait of the whole workplace. They can see how one change will affect another element of the facility and make suggestions to management that will maximize the benefits for their facilities.

Bringing Together the Components of Facilities Management

Of course, even the best managers can’t reap the benefits of facilities management without the right tools for the job. That’s where we come in.
